Riverside Presbyterian Church has adopted an exciting new way of teaching
Christian education to your children and youth. Passport to the Promised Land
workshops have been created to help our children experience God's Word, not
just hear about it.
Educators have long held the theory that most children do not learn only from
lecture and reading. In fact, according to Harvard professor Howard Gardner,
people have "multiple intelligences" and learn in a variety of ways--including
acting, singing, and movement. They workshop approach is based on this
theory.
Over 1500 churches nationwide are using this teaching method, known as the
Workshop Rotation Model, with great success.
Each lesson is taught several ways
Our Passport to the Promised Land workshops offer each lesson in a variety of
formats over the course of four to five weeks. Every Sunday, children rotate to
a different workshop setting where they experience the same lesson in a new
and different way.
These Bible-themed lessons are designed to grab the hold kids' attention
using participatory activities rather than lectures.
Children travel to specially designed classrooms
The kids are grouped by age and the lessons are taught at age-appropriate
levels. Each week they travel to a different room along with the same
volunteer "shepherds." Teachers present the same lesson to each of the six
age groups, from pre-school to junior high, adapting it for appropriateness.
Classrooms have been transformed into learning environments with settings
and props that match both the theme and activity and reinforce the lesson.
The rewards are great for all
Children aren't the only ones who benefit from Riverside Presbyterian
Church's exciting Passport to the Promised Land Sunday School workshops.
"Not only is it exciting for the children to come to the beautifully decorated
classrooms, but it fills me with a new enthusiasm for teaching Bible stories,"
says one teacher.
Teachers have a wonderful opportunity to match their own interests and
talents with the various workshop choices, such as Art, Multimedia, Bible Skills
and Games, Drama, Science, and Cooking.
Two shepherds accompany the same group of children as they "travel" to
different teachers and classrooms each week. Providing continuity and a
personal connection for the class, shepherds help build relationships within the
program.
If you agree that for truth to become an intrinsic part of a person's life, it needs
to be experienced first-hand, you owe it to yourself and your children to check
out RPC's Sunday School workshop program!
