News for the Week of November 16
WNL! GIRLS GROUP  AND WNL! BOYS OPEN GYM
The WNL! Girls Group will meet this Wednesday, 11/19.  We will gather in the
kitchen to help clean up after the meal and then move on to our activities.  This
will be our last official meeting until WNL! resumes in January.  See you then!
Please call or email
Mary Koon with any questions.  Jr. and Sr. High boys are
invited to open gym.

HUMAN SCENE
The Human Scene meets at 9 a.m. on Sundays in the parlor.  Join us for
informal discussions on topics of interest. On November 16—Global Weapons
Trade.  Trace the major movements of weapons from the manufacturers into the
hands of various armies, mercenaries, militias and terrorists.  Pete Jansen
explores this global traffic and asks what the Church should be doing about it.
On November 23 -  Equity in Public Education.  RB School Board member Jim
Marciniak will lead a discussion on equity in public education from a Christian
perspective.  What do public schools have to do with Christianity?  On
November 30—First Sunday of Advent.  Mary Koon will moderate a group
discussion about traditions of the season and ways to remember the meaning of
it all in the chaos of today’s world.

CARERS CORNER
Our donation of the month is beverages and paper goods (decaf coffee, tea,
lemonade, hot chocolate).  This is our focus donation for BEDS.   Place your
donations in the trunk in the hallway. We are also collecting for the armed
services in “Operation Stars and Stripes.”

YOUTH GROUP  TONIGHT!
The Youth Groups will meet Sunday (Jr. High 6:00 p.m.—7:15 p.m., Sr. High 7:
30 p.m.—8:45 p.m.) in the Celestial Cinema.  We will play a game and do yoga.
Bring a yoga mat or a beach towel and wear comfortable clothes.  Bring a friend!

CARE PACKAGES FOR COLLEGE STUDENTS
Youth Groups will be preparing care packages for college students on
November 30.  We need addresses! So far, only a handful of families have
provided this information.  PLEASE let the office know where your college
student lives, and include a phone and e-mail.

TEN THOUSAND VILLAGES NOW IN OAK PARK!
In years past, the Ten Thousand Villages store from Glen Ellyn has provided a
wonderful shopping experience for our congregation, traditionally on the Sunday
after Thanksgiving.  They no longer can accommodate us with a trip to
Riverside, but we now have the option of shopping in Oak Park for the same
wonderful gift items.  The Ten Thousand Villages store on Marion Street in Oak
Park offers all the beautiful crafts from around the world we’ve come to love.
Proceeds, as always, go to benefit the craftsmen and women.  Consider a trip to
Oak Park for your holiday shopping and support this great organization.

VISION HELPERS NEEDED
We are looking for a few more people to help with the folding of the Vision on
the last Tuesday of the month at 9:30 a.m. for approximately 2 hours.   Socialize
with fellow church members while helping to get the Vision ready for mailing.
Snacks provided!  Contact the church office if you are interested.

THE VISION IS GOING GREEN!
Due to the high cost of mailing the Vision each month and the unreliability of the
post office’s bulk mailing service, the Vision will  be distributed electronically
beginning in January.  If you do not have an e-mail address, please contact the
church office to let us know you still need to receive a paper copy.

PECANS, PECANS, PECANS—NUTS FOR YOU!  ORDER NOW!
Pecans are great for baking and good for you.  One pound bag is only $7.50.
Checks payable to:  Erie House Women’s Auxiliary.  For years, Riverside
Presbyterian Women have handled the sale of freshly harvested pecan halves
to benefit Erie Neighborhood House.  Sarah Dudak and Dorothy Jansky are
selling them immediately after worship  on Sunday, in the parlor right outside the
south sanctuary door.

ALL CHURCH FAMILY WORK DAY
There will be an all church family work day on Sunday, November 23, from 1:00

Stained Glass Window Fundraiser
The Rose Window, one of our oldest and most prominent stained glass
windows, needs our help! Last fall the Trustees learned that the wooden and
metal frames holding the glass were badly damaged by condensation and heat
trapped by the unventilated cover glass which had been installed in the 1960’s.
The window frame is badly rotted and the integrity of the window is threatened,
so we must move forward without further delay to raise funds to save the window.

The Rose Window was dedicated in 1897 in memory of Kate V. Harrington, wife
of Mr. S. H. Harrington. The window depicts a popular late 19th century
allegorical angel holding a crown signifying Christ and lilies signifying death.
Angels in opalescent white robes with widespread wings were commonly
employed by masters of the opalescent age such as John LaFarge and Tiffany
Studios, but the designer of the Rose Window is currently unknown.

The cost of the restoration is approximately $70,000. This includes a complete
rebuild of the frame and repair and reinstallation of all art glass. It also includes
a properly ventilated secondary glazing.

The Rose Window has graced our church and community with her beauty for
more than 100 years, and now she needs our help.  Church members and
friends, present and past, help us save this legacy and make your mark in RPC
history with the purchase of an engraved brick paver. The personalized pavers
will be installed to create a commemorative walkway at the front of the church,
below the Rose Window and surrounding the rose garden. Pavers can be
purchased as gifts or memorials to honor friends and family and are available in
two sizes.  Order forms are available at the church, or
can be downloaded here.
Continue the legacy!
