Heifer International
Dan West (1893-1971), a Christian aid worker in Spain during their civil war,
agonized over the life-and-death decisions involving cups of reconstituted milk
he gave to starving children.  It was never enough, and infants who received
no milk died.  These children don’t need a cup of milk; they need a cow, he
thought.  He dreamed of bringing some cows from his native Indiana so they
could produce their own milk.  Then he got another idea: Why not send
pregnant cows, so those who receive the gift of life in the name of Jesus Christ
can pass it along to others and become part of the chain?

When he returned home in 1938, he told dairy farmers in his town of his idea.
When WW II ended, West and others began to ship cows and then sheep,
goats, chickens, and rabbits to people on both sides of the conflict.  The idea
grew and many churches joined in.

Since then, millions of animals have been given to people in 128 different
countries by the organization Dan West founded:  Heifer International.
(Reprinted from The Upper Room daily devotional of December 4, 2006.)

The children of RPC are carrying on West’s dream by proving that every
penny, nickel and dime can make a difference!  Their weekly offerings support
the purchase of animals for people around the world.  The 2006-2007 fund-
raising campaign was a smashing success, with $900 donated, enough to
purchase one llama, one water buffalo, two flocks of chicks, one flock of ducks,
one flock of geese, one pair of rabbits, one sheep, one goat, and one pig.

Night Ministry
RPC prepares and serves a meal the second Friday of each month for Night
Ministry.  In winter months, it’s soup and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, in
warmer months, a hot-dog dinner.

Since 1976, the Night Ministry connects with Chicago’s vulnerable youth and
adults through our street outreach, youth shelter and supportive services, and
a mobile health outreach bus. They  provide basic resources, free health care,
housing and supportive services for youth, referrals to other agencies for
specific resources, in a welcoming and non-judgmental environment.

To help prepare or serve a meal, contact Ellen Hamilton at
emhamilt@uillinois.

CARERS Committee
Who are the CARERS and what do they do? The CARERS Committee is a sub-
committee of the Deacons.  Their mission is to help people in need in the
Chicago area. Through our affiliation with the First Presbyterian Church of
Chicago, in the Woodlawn Area:

1.  We collect and deliver food for the Food Pantry each month. RPC members
are helping approximately 150 people/families who receive food items every
Thursday.
2.  Once a year, we have a collection of warm coats, jackets, hats, gloves and
scarves to help keep many people warm in Chicago’s cold winter months.
3.  We have the loose coin offering 2 months out of the year. The money that
is collected is sent directly to First Church to help with their Food for Life
program. This program serves 150 to 200 individuals (adults and children)
every Tuesday.
4,  Every month, we notify the congregation of the “Food of the Month.” Please
think of these needy people when you do your grocery shopping. There’s
always room for your food in our trunk.

Interfaith House
One of the missions of the CARERS Committee is the Interfaith House in
Chicago. Interfaith House is a respite facility for homeless men and women who
are recovering from a recent illness or hospitalization and haveno where to go.
It provides a temporary home for about 60 adults with a 6weeks’ duration. The
staff provides trips to doctors, nourishing food, clothing, contact with social
services and counseling. They have an 85% success rate in locating suitable
work and housing for these formerly homeless individuals who need help and a
means to begin again.

Your contributions will help supply them with the means to regain their dignity
and face the challenges of returning to everyday living, hopefully to a better
life. A list of wishes is posted by the Interfaith House receptacle in the CARERS’
Corner adjacent to Rev. Scott’s office. Please feel free to take one of the lists
with you. To learn more please visit
www.interfaithhouse.org. You will be
inspired!

BEDS
For twenty years, the BEDS organization has been offering a warm meal and
safe sleeping locations for the west suburban homeless community from
October 15 to  April 30.  Individuals from RPC have volunteered at the BEDS
church sites in Western Springs, LaGrange, LaGrange Park, Brookfield, Indian
Head Park and Lyons.  The money from aluminum cans for the Riverside
Preschool recycling program has helped the preschool earn money for BEDS
for years.  Your participation in the Covenant’s CROP Walk has raised a local
component which usually has gone to BEDS.
Volunteer opportunities include
helping to prepare and serving meals, and overnight service.  Contact Marilyn
Slanec for more information, or e-mail BEDS directly at
beds@cyberlink.com.
The Companions
For the past few years we have supported “The Companions,” a Christian
prison ministry organization.  We have asked you to participate by taking a
packet of ten selected cards, signing them, giving a personal message of hope
or an encouraging Bible verse, stamping them, and returning the cards to us.
We mail them to the Companions’ office, where volunteers address them.  Last
year alone 6500 cards were sent to inmates and another 8500 were delivered
to current and recently released inmates throughout the state.  The impact of
this project has been truly encouraging, giving people words of hope and
renewed faith.  Please help this year.  The packets will be available in October
and the deadline will be before Thanksgiving.

following the September flood.  If you know any of these displaced people,
